British Britannia Silver Coins
The British Silver Britannia coin is a bullion coin that has been issued since 1997, under the name Britannia. The alloy used is Britannia silver, with millesimal fineness 958 (95.8%). The silver Britannia coins are available in ones weighing a half, quarter, and one-tenth of an ounce, with face values of 50, 25 and 10 pounds respectively.
The British Silver Britannia coins have been released each year, from 1997 onwards, that was when a silver proof set was offered. In all the even-numbered years after that, the reverse design has been that of a standing Britannia figure. From 1999 onwards, and continuing in odd-numbered years, a series of non-repeating, alternate depictions of Britannia have replaced the standing figure. The 2001 design of the Silver Britannia combined Britannia with the British lion, and depicted her dress and helmet as North European in style rather than South European.
The dimensions of the Silver Britannia coins are as follows: one ounce: diameter 40 mm (31.1 g), half ounce: diameter 27 mm (15.5 g), quarter ounce: diameter 22 mm (7.7 g), and tenth ounce: diameter 16.50 mm (3.1 g).
